Historic Heart of Perth to get busy spruicing up the city

Julian Wright, Community News, 31 August 2018

After freshening up Perth’s east end with Stage one of our art and landscape project in 2017, Historic Heart of Perth Inc is keen to create community events and activations.

This year we have been liaising with the Town Team Movement working on creating a committee of small business owners and residents to drive events and activations in the Historic Heart of Perth.

Historic Heart talks to the Town team Movement

The Town Team Movement is one of the many organisations Historic Heart of Perth Inc has been working with over the past 2 years. The Town Team Movement helps #townteams to organise, engage and empower their local communities.

Last week Historic Heart's Project Manager, Sandy Anghie, spoke to Town Team about the Historic Heart Project, how we have teamed up with social enterprise Green World Revolution and community care organisation Ruah to make a difference to our neighbourhood and its community.

east end coffee walk

Kent Acott, The West Australian, 28 August 2018

Great story on Historic Heart's new App in the West Australian newspaper this week.

Historic Heart's App and walks are about encouraging the people of Perth, and tourists, to explore Perth's east end and rediscover this wonderful part of our city.

Our free App is available to download from 1 September 2018.

Historic Heart's small museums

Kent Acott, The West Australian, 21 July 2018

Fantastic story on Historic Heart's small museums in Saturday's West Australian newspaper.

The Historic Heart is home to one of Perth’s greatest collections of heritage listed buildings, forming important streetscapes of late 19th and 20th century architecture. This is evident if you walk through the area. But what you wouldn’t know just walking through Perth’s east end is that some of these buildings house intriguing small museums.

Historic Heart’s museums include the Old Court House Law Museum (housed in Perth’s oldest building, constructed in 1836), the Royal Perth Hospital Museum (housed in Perth’s first hospital), the DFES Heritage Centre (housed in Perth’s first fire station) and the YAL Museum (pictured here).

We hope the people of Perth take time to walk the Historic Heart, from the Old Court House Law Museum in Stirling Gardens to The Perth Mint on Hill Street and beyond, and explore the history of our city within these intriguing spaces.

For further details see the SMALL MUSEUMS page of our website.

Green World Revolution in the Historic Heart

Great to see how much Historic Heart’s plants have grown in the past 6 months - thanks to the great work of Toby Whittington’s team at Green World Revolution (GWR). Historic Heart engaged GWR to take care of our plants and planter boxes - and in the process we have created 2 jobs, for Edward and Jess.

GWR is a not for profit social enterprise, growing jobs for the unemployed, providing pathways to sustainable livelihoods for people who are suffering from long-term unemployment.

Find out more about GWR via their website www.gwr.org.au

Perth artist Drew Straker brings life to Historic Heart laneway

Business Insider, 14 June 2018

Perth artist Drew Straker ('the Muralist') has helped bring life to a Pier Street laneway in the Historic Heart with 3 mural artworks which appear to light up the laneway like neon signs ... but are actually 2D and created using only spray paint and a ‘neon glow’ technique.

Great story in Business Insider - with Straker explaining how he creates his work. See www.businessinsider.com.au/fake-glowing-neon-lights-mural

'Cool Change' coming for Perth's Historic Heart

Perth Voice Interactive, 8 June 2018

A new gallery is set to open in the heritage listed Bon Marche arcade in Perth’s Historic Heart in August.

The gallery, Cool Change Contemporary, is an artist-run initiative which will run a monthly program of exhibitions as well as performances, screenings, workshops and events. It will also offer a studio residency program.

The team behind Cool Change, which includes people from Moana, Polizia, Success and Paper Mountain, are calling for proposals from artists, curators, producers and collectives for its new program. Applications are on their website www.coolchange.net.au
