Heart Heart in STM's 2018 'Hot List'

Sunday Times Magazine, 21 January 2018

Great to see the two new hotels opening in Perth’s east end included in STM’s 2018 Hot List. At number 5 is Hibernian Place, home of the new Westin Hotel, and at number 27 is QT Hotel. Looks like Perth’s east end - the Historic Heart - is the place to be in 2018.

Historic Heart Project in The West Australian

Story by Kent Acott, The West Australian, Monday 18 December 2017

An art competition using street furniture as canvases has brought a touch of colour to a major revitalisation project in Perth’s east end. For the competition, 65 planter boxes and benches from Barrack to Irwin streets were painted with a WA theme by local artists.

The winner was a detailed depiction of a local bird on the wing by Curtin University graduate Clare McFarlane. The people’s choice award, determined by online voting, was won by James Giddy for his painting of a bandicoot.

Both winning entries were located outside the Miss Maud restaurant in Murray Street. Miss Maud hotel manager Claus Paulus said the artwork had attracted a lot of interest. “Miss Maud’s distinctive building and its Christmas displays always draw a lot of attention but what our hotel and restaurant staff enjoyed hearing were the questions from interstate and overseas hotel guests curious about the paintings, the wildflowers and the initiative,” he said.

Historic Heart Art Prizes

Historic Heart of Perth Inc's first project sees 65 planter boxes and benches installed across Perth's east end, from Barrack Street to Irwin Street. This is a patina of what's West Australian, with the planter boxes painted by West Australian artists and planted with West Australian native plants.

There were two artist prizes for this project, with the winners announced at a celebration on Monday 27th November 2017. James Giddy won the 2017 People's Choice Award (selected via online voting) and Clare McFarlane won the 2017 Judge's Choice Award (selected by Nathan Giles from the Perth Public Art Foundation). Congratulations to James and Clare, and all of the artists who took part in the project.

Art at the heart of a revitalised Perth inner city

Thank you to Business News for a great story on the Historic Heart Project this week ...

"We’ve seen massive infrastructure projects and big projects, but it's not just about that, it's about the street experience" Member for Perth, John Carey told Business News.

Mr Carey, who spoke at the Historic Heart launch last month, promoted Perth’s adoption of a "city of neighbourhoods" approach and said the Historic Heart project could be a model to tackle other under performing areas of Perth.

Historic Heart launch

To mark the installation of Historic Heart's first art projects, a launch event was held on Sunday 15th October 2017 at the beautiful Kirkman House on the east end of Murray Street.

The aim of Historic Heart's first art projects is to indicate change and new energy in this forgotten area of our city – the Historic Heart of Perth.

From a Western Australian heritage, culture and arts perspective, the revitalization of Perth’s east end is important ‐ the Historic Heart being home to one of Perth’s greatest collections of heritage listed buildings, forming significant streetscapes of late nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture. The area is also important from a tourism perspective, being home to 16 hotels and a number of tourist attractions, which means for many visitors to Perth their first experience of our city is in the Historic Heart.

At the event, Adrian Fini (Chair of Historic Heart of Perth Inc) thanked our sponsors and supporters, in particular the State Government.

Hon David Templeman MLA (Minister for Local Government, Heritage, Culture & the Arts) and Mr John Carey MLA (Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier), represented the State Government. Both made speeches, congratulating Historic Heart on the work done to date and encouraging others to support the initiative.
